The practice of homeopathy originated in
the 18th century. It was developed by a
German physician named Samuel
Hahnemann. Hahnemann viewed disease as
a disruption of an individuals vital force. The
vital force is best described as the overall
concept of what protects an individual from
harm. It can be affected by an individuals
diet, environment, genetics, and emotions.
This disruption or shift, would result in
"dis-ease", causing the patient to
experience certain symptoms. Through
experimentation, Hahnemann found the
phenomenon of "like cures like". By giving
extremely small quantities of substances
which, in larger amounts, could cause similar
symptoms; Hahnemann reasoned that this
"dis-ease" would be rectified, and the vital
force shifted back into a balanced state
resulting in a return to wellness. Classic
homeopathy usually involves giving one
remedy at a time at different potencies to
bring about a shift in the vital force.
